About
You arrived at the weblog of Geert Baeke. I am the technology manager for a company called Xylos (Belgium). I mostly work with Microsoft technologies such as Windows, Active Directory, Exchange, Sharepoint, MSCS, and more. I am also actively busy with VMware's products, focussing on VMware ESX.

Re: XenSource XenEnterprise 3.1: Installation and Basic Management

Geert, I'm the technical writer at XenSource. I really appreciate your comments on the documentation and I thank you for taking the time to do that.
Some of the issues that you raise I hope you will find to be addressed in the new 3.2 version of XenServer, which will be out very soon. The networking and storage sections have had some additional details added, but I don't really explain the internals of the system that much. It seems inappropriate for this manual to do too much of that. The intention of the manual is to document the somewhat closed appliance-like model of the product and its supported features.
There will probably always be some capabilities that are there simply because the privileged domain0 that manages the XenVMs is Linux, but which are not really targeted, supported features of the product. These will usually not be documented in the manual. Such things that fit in this “well, it works, but it is not supported” category will be found in the forums and the Knowledge Base.
Another issue arises with some capabilities that *are* considered to be part of the product but end up being given as recipes without much GUI/CLI integration or strong explanation. We expect to catch up a bit and change that in future releases, partly by better documenting them (particularly in the form of some typical usage scenarios, with examples), but mainly by stronger integration through the Adminstrator Console (and therefore a clearer usage model).
If you have any more ideas about how the user manual might be improved, please feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Alan
